Sunday Brain Dump – 2/22/15

  1. WOW! What a powerful weekend for the Kingdom!!!
  2. The weather got nasty in the DMV and tried to damper our plans… I’m only more encouraged and excited about what God is doing!
  3. Saturday was the day that we planned our “Saving Our Sons Town Hall Forum.” All week, the weather forecast was that heavy snow would begin in the late afternoon. Well… it started about an hour before the forum was set to begin.
  4. As the snow was getting thick, I was 2 seconds from postponing the event. As much as I wanted the event to happen, I also wanted everyone to be safe. All but one of the panelists had arrived and encouraged me not to pull the plug. I’m so glad they did.
  5. Difficult decisions like this are an every day part of pastoral leadership. It doesn’t get any easier.
  6. We had a good turnout considering the horrible weather… but I know that there were many people who couldn’t attend because of the snow. I can only imagine how packed and impactful the event could have been.
  7. Although we truncated the event so that it could end early, the conversation in the forum was rich. It got heated at times, and I loved that. Our young men rarely get the opportunity to have discussions like this with impactful leaders. I told one of the reporters there that the conversation was uncomfortable because it was uncommon. It’s on us to make sure that the conversation becomes more common.
  8. Because we had to cut the forum short and we only really scratched the surface of what we were trying to do, we’re planning Part 2 for next month. As many people as attended, I know there were hundreds who couldn’t because of the snow.  Stay tuned for the new date!
  9. I was so grateful to have the honor of going on WHUR Radio on Thursday evening to discuss the forum. The original plan was to briefly mention the forum while we talked bout other “Black History” issues. As it turned out, WHUR made the whole show about the forum! Wow!!!
  10. Today at The Heights, we continued our series entitled, “In God We Trust.” I am spending 5 weeks on Sundays and 7 weeks on Wednesdays teaching through Biblical principles of Financial Management.
  11. Today I discussed contentment and wise money management from Philippians 4:10-13.
  12. For the 2nd week in a row, winter weather made it difficult for people to get to church today.
  13. Again, because of the weather I thought about cancelling our first morning service. Then, seeing people respond to the Word and the invitation to trust Jesus reminds me that any particular worship experience may be designed just for one person!
  14. If you missed it, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” should be uploaded to our website very soon. Click here to listen to last week’s message and this week’s message.
  15. Does that title sound familiar? Yes, I played Bobby McFerrin in church! (You have to be 30+ to know what I’m talking about! LOL.)
  16. Days like this make me wish that we had streaming services. Working on it.
  17. Tonight we were back at church again for a Racial Unity Joint Worship Service hosted by The Heights, Grace Baptist Church, Arundel Baptist Church and First Baptist Church of Green Valley.
  18. Each of our churches participate in the same denominational affiliation. This began as an idea that came up as we had lunch together. We began to toss around ideas of what it would look like for us to bring our churches together for a multi-racial worship service.
  19. Tonight, all those ideas came together beautifully. It was amazing to see all of us come together under the banner of Christ. We merged our praise teams and worshipped together, we shared in a message together, then we ate and fellowshipped together.
  20. I preached a message on Racial Unity from Galatians 3:26-28. I’m not sure if it was recorded. I’ll work on that!
  21. After such a busy weekend, I’m exhausted… and beginning to come down with a little cold. Praying for a productive week for you.. and a restful week for me!
  22. Much love!
