Sunday Brain Dump – 11/2/14

Sunday Brain Dump – 11/2/14

  1. IMG_1700Great weekend of challenges and celebrations at the Heights.
  2. Today I preached a message that I had been working on for a few weeks from Titus 2:6-8. It was a challenge to all men to step up and model what Biblical Manhood looks like for a generation of young men who have not seen strong Christian Men.
  3. In this message, I make the argument that “in order to be a strong man, I must SEE a strong man.”
  4. Titus 2:6-8 is the text that I usually write when I’m signing copies of my book. It’s such an important passage for the concept of #SavingOurSons.
  5. The audio for the message should be available very soon. Here’s the link to all our sermons.
  6. Our praise team was on point today. They introduced a new song, I Will Follow You by Chris Tomlin. I love the song and the “flavor” that our band puts on it.
  7. We also welcomed 11 new members to our church. I love seeing people added to our numbers daily!
  8. I hosted the book release celebration for Saving Our Sons on Saturday at the Prince Georges African American Museum & Cultural Center.
  9. Didn’t even know that this Museum existed… but WOW! It’s an incredible museum that displays history of the African-American experience particularly in Maryland. If you live in the area, I encourage you to check out the museum, and take your kids. Let’s expose ourselves to our rich history!
  10. Because the book is about effectively engaging young men of color, we took time at the book release to highlight the accomplishments and triumphs of young men of color who are excelling. We were blessed by the gifts of a young entrepreneur/caterer, an 18 year old nationally recognized artist, and a young brother who will record his debut CD next Saturday. I cherish the opportunity to celebrate our young men.
  11. I finally received the frame for my doctoral diploma. Was excited to put it in the frame and hang it up in my office. Awesome feeling.
  12. I was so blessed by everyone who came out to the celebration. You learn a lot about people and relationships by those who take their time to celebrate your victories with you. I’m appreciative.
  13. One of the things I learned from the Executive Director of the museum, Dr. Jacqueline Brown, was that emancipation for slaves held in Maryland did not come until a year after the Emancipation Proclamation. President Lincoln’s Proclamation only freed slaves in southern rebellious states (which Maryland was not one). It took a special law a year later to free slaves in Maryland. November 1st is the celebration of that emancipation.
  14. This past week I had the privilege of being interviewed on Prince George’s CTV for #SavingOurSons. It was a quick 3 minute interview where I was able to share about the book. I believe it will air on Tuesday at 4:30pm, then again at 8:30pm. Set your DVR’s!
  15. Our Harvest Fest was a great success this year. We were able to engage hundreds of kids and their families,  share the gospel with them, and send them home full of candy! #success
  16. Our teenagers apparently enjoyed the Teen Lock-In also. When I got to church on Saturday morning I found a huge whole in one of the walls. #success
  17. I mentioned earlier about the new members coming in to our church. I also received a letter from someone withdrawing their membership. As a Pastor, that is never easy. Especially when you’ve made significant investments into that person, and you know your ministry has had impact. At the same time, these are not my sheep, but God’s. They said He called them to another ministry. How can I argue with that?
  18. Exciting week ahead, which will be capped off by the Mighty Men of Valor Conference this weekend. I’ve been attending this conference for about a decade and it has been impactful in my development as a man. This year I’m blessed to have been invited to teach two breakouts at the conference.
  19. Brothers, you should make yourself available to go to MVM. It’s definitely worth the investment. Click here to register!
  20. Have a great week!
