My Presidential Prayer
I pray Your blessing upon our new President-Elect Mr. Donald J. Trump, our newly elected government officials, and our country. Your Word makes it clear that no one is in authority unless You have appointed them, so I trust Your sovereignty in the election results.
I also trust that the king’s heart is in Your hand. I pray that You will guide him to lead our country with Godly wisdom. I am hopeful that the issues that have been championed by “conservatives” in our country will be aptly addressed with this administration.
Furthermore, I pray for those who will surround him, including Vice-President Elect Mike Pence, his cabinet and staff. I pray that these will be wise leaders who will give him sound counsel, keep his impulses in check, and hold him accountable of his responsibilities to serve all Americans.
I also ask for Your healing of our divided nation. This election has been the most painfully divisive that I have experienced in my life. We are fractured within our nation and within the Faith. May such healing begin with Your people, as we humble ourselves, pray, seek Your face and turn from our wickedness.
I recognize my role in helping to make this happen. As a Christian and a pastor, I can play a significant role in lovingly coaching people within my sphere through angst, anger, misinformation and apathy.
Lord, I must confess to You that I have some fear. Mr. Trump’s qualifications for this position are questionable. His rhetoric has been dangerous. His racist remarks have been jarring. His reflection of “the good old days” are reminiscent of the atrocities of Jim Crow. His stances on vital issues have been unclear at best, and self-contradictory at worst. His allegiances to the economically elite seem to come at a cost to the poor people that You have commanded us to care for.
However, I am well aware of Your history of using flawed leaders to accomplish Your will. Remind me that my faith is in You and not him. I believe. Help my unbelief.
Finally, I thank you for the reign of Your eternal Kingdom. My true hope is not in who is in the Oval Office of the White House, but in Who is on the throne of glory! I look forward to the day when Jesus returns to earth to bring culmination to the Kingdom reign that was inaugurated with His earthly ministry, purchased with His crucifixion, and was proven by His resurrection.
God of our weary years, God of our silent tears, Thou who hast brought us thus far on the way; Thou who hast by thy might, led us into the light, keep us forever in Thy path, we pray.
In Jesus’ name,
